Puritan Belief

The Puritans are the men of God who started in the 16th century building on the purity of the gospel message that Salvation is by Grace alone.

Young Men Preaching

This weekend I visited Kyogle (Picture to the right is part of my Pops farm) where I was bought up and after helping out with a Rabbit infestation on the Saturday we attended church on the Sunday. To my pleasant surprise there was one of my old friends a young man of 25 preaching a sermon on The Blood.

Young Men Preaching - The Puritans
Charles Spurgeon, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards and John Knox just to name a few were preaching from very young ages (easily 25 and under)

Young Men Scriptures
"You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders;" 1 Peter 5:5
"...to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you." 1 John 2:14
"..Likewise urge the young men to be sensible...with purity in doctrine, sound in speech which is beyond reproach." Titus 2:6-8

When Should Young Men Preach?
Now although the bible is quiet on exact ages that a man should start preaching in front of the church I would like to give what I think is a good age to start: 17 years and onwards.

If we are to urge the young men to be sensible, pure in doctrine, sound in speech why not each week get one of the young men up to give something that he has prepared with Lord during the week. I think it would be great for the older men in the faith to provide feedback and encouragement to spur them on to good works.

Should there be conditions?
* The young men preaching should be born again.
* The young men preaching should be encouraged to use expository preaching and keep analogies and stories to a minimum.
* The young men should not be hindered in their preaching scope.
* This list should not be to long.

Feedback
I would love to know what your church does in relation to their Young Men Preaching or your thoughts on this subject.

I have recently changed churches (2 months ago) and the preacher there is great! Although very pentacostal church the sermons thus far have been totally christ and scripture focused, with anecdotes kept short (usually). This pastor began full time ministry / preaching at the age of 18 and I would guess is now in his mid 40's. Last service i attended his son who is in his early to mid 30s preached on the importance of community and how as christians we should have strong relationships and accountability with other christians, and especcially within our home church. He too began preaching at 18. If a young man of God can preach then he should. This will give him a solid foundation for his future years. This preaching should not however be restricted to church services but street preaching and short mission trips if possible. The most important though is for the young man to have a mentor who can encourage and guide him.

I really like your blog. Thank you for your emphasis on expository preaching. In our day it seems that so many are trying to apply band-aids with "needs-based" preaching rather than the inner healing that the "sincere milk of the word" can provide.

Thank you for your blog. Recently, my wife and I left a church where there was an older minister who kept anecdotes and jokes to a maximum, and scripture was once in a while mentioned. We are now members of a Reformed Church where the emphasis is entirely on the Word of God. (This is actually the church I was born in, but had changed when we got married.) I have recently just started reading blogs, and enjoy reading the puritan and calvinistic postings I have found so far. Thank you for the good reading.
