Puritan Belief

The Puritans are the men of God who started in the 16th century building on the purity of the gospel message that Salvation is by Grace alone.

Spiritual Answers

Spiritual Answers1. i) Are the enemies of Christ literally a footstool under his feet or is this symbolic? Symbolic
ii) If symbolic then is Jesus literally sitting at the right hand of someone else? No, He is not literally sitting at the right hand of someone else. Right hand is symbolic for power/authority. (Well done Daniel)
2. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son where was the Holy Spirit mentioned? (please supply verse) Luke 15:17 And when he came to himself ... (Well done Gordon)
3. According to the last mention in scripture which person is sitting on the throne? Rev 22:3 "... but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it," The person sitting on the throne is JESUS.

Now for my next question perhaps EVEN HARDER then the above 3 unless of course it is given to you by the Lord then it is simple.

QUESTION: According to scripture to be a Christian/regenerate/born-again/believer which person MUST BE IN US?

Romans 8:9,11 make reference to the necessity of the indwelling by the Spirit of God or the Spirit of Christ. This is stated as a condition of salvation.

Jesus must be in us! The Spirit seals us. Jesus saves us!

I was doing some reading and thought this was a good answer too.

"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" (John 3:5-7).

And this.....

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you" (John 6:53).

Sorry Shawn the question was loaded.

Gordon oh so close Sprit of Christ is correct but not as good as Jesus Christ because the question was asking for the person. A Spirit is not a person hence it gives the person of this spirit eg Spirit of the person Christ. (Spirit of Christ)

Michael hit the nail on the head. Jesus in us

Full answer:
Jesus Christ is in You

Hmm... "Sprit of Christ is correct but not as good as Jesus Christ because the question was asking for the person. A Spirit is not a person hence it gives the person of this spirit eg Spirit of the person Christ. (Spirit of Christ)".

My gut instinct is to say that a spirit is a person, otherwise we're problematic in several areas. First of all, God is spirit, (lacking the article 'a', but still). Second, that statement seems to imply that the trinity is a faulty concept (but perhaps that I am reading wrong). Third, what more will we be upon death (until we receive a new body) other than spirit... and if a spirit is not a person, do we stop being a person for that time period.

Perhaps my thinking is off... have I taken this out of context... or am I thinking wrong? I'm not arguing with the question of abiding (john 15) in the heart, so much as the quoted text explanation.

Here's Charles Hodge on the Spirit.
"With regard to His nature, is He a person or a mere power?... The personality of the Spirit has been the faith of the Church from the beginning... Personality includes intelligence, will, and individual subsistence." He then goes on to demonstrate from scripture that the Spirit has intelligence, will, and individual subsistence.

This is a bit tangental, perhaps, but just clarity on what you were implying. Thanks!

Reading back over the comments, I realize that I had not differentiated between spirit of Christ and Spirit of Christ/God.

So, first of all, this clears up so much in my last post. I thought it inconsistent of PB (which I enjoy and respect) to jeopardize the doctrine of trinity, now I see it was my error in comprehension. So I guess we got a little bit of Hodge for fun.

Still though, I would like to hear a little exegesis on the dichotomy between spirit and Spirit of God/Christ. Is the context of Romans 8 not speaking of the third person of the trinity?

As a further side note, I like the quiz idea... I hope I'm not stomping on the flowers in my search for weeds though.

mrichthus: I am so glad that you are asking these questions. If the Lord has revealed to you some truth that he hasn't to me I want to know it, I want him to reveal it to me to. (1 Cor 2:13)

First like yourself I am not interested in either gut instincts or man made doctrines such as the trinity.

This blog is called puritan belief because I want to search out the purity (Puritan) of the gospel message not the purity of mens doctrines.

I am interested in what the scripture says. I am interested in what the Spirit reveals to me as truth.

Now you think a Spirit is a person. Can you give me just one scripture that says this. Here are some questions to ask yourself.

Jesus has a Spirit does that make him 2 different people?

I can give you a scripture that says that the fullness of God (Godhead) dwells in the ONE PERSON JESUS:

I can tell you which person the fullness of deity dwells in, it dwells bodily in Jesus Christ.

Collosians 2:9
